Our boy has had extreme difficulties reading since he was very young. It's far beyond a frustration... he's got the ability but is simply not able to read when his eyes aren't cooperating. We of course wish this had been diagnosed when he was much younger, but at least it has been diagnosed. In simplest terms he has a "binocular vision dysfunction". It's like the fine motor skills of his eyes won't cooperate. This causes him to have symptoms of dyslexia, sees patterns, lines and words moving, or he can't focus on one word (his eyes doing different things). We were finally recommended to a program designed to retrain his eye-brain coordination, it's months long, run by doctors, and will cost us $3600.
He has started the program and he is nearing completion, we are already happily making payments... This program has already completely changed his life.
We see it lowering the level of frustration with school for him in general. He now simply picks things up and reads! This is a whole new and less frustrating world for him.
He is also nearing the end of wearing braces, insurance covers everything but $1800 or so, and we may as well ask while we're here.
Deep felt thanks to those who wish to donate....
An update..... He's got the braces, and he's making tremendous progress in the vision therapy. He is a little bit ahead of schedule in the vision therapy, so he'll need a couple fewer sessions (which is why reduced the gift goal by about $400).
ANOTHER UPDATE... Making excellent progress with the vision stuff... changing his life.
Braces... top and bottom on.
thanks again for contributing!!
