My daughter started kindergarten reading well and enjoying school. Then her father died suddenly and she withdrew, her grief so great that her memory and comprehension skills were affected. She is now 12 years old and still struggling. She dreads going to school every day. It breaks my heart. The public school system has labeled her as not worth the effort and her needs are ignored. Her social life has crumbled, as have her grades. The public school will not even work with me anymore. They didn’t know her before and don’t see her now.
Outside of school, she goes to tutoring at $50.00 an hour. She loves it and thrives with her tutor but one hour a week is not enough. I have found a school, Arrowsmith that will support her and get her back on track. They will help her regain her self-esteem, her academics and her bright smile. It
costs $20,000 for one year. This is my dream.
The cost to Canadian taxpayers over a lifetime (50 years) for a high school drop out is $211,000.00. The cost of putting my daughter through this school will be $60,000 over three years. Once she is an adult she will be contributing to society through taxes rather than receiving funds from government. This should be our goal with the entire 120,000 high school dropouts in Canada each year. It is much cheaper to pay $60,000 up front and have them contribute later than pay $211,000 over a lifetime for each dropout.
I am currently in school and paying tuition for myself and I can’t afford both her tuition and mine right now. Once my schooling is finished I will have a good paying job and will be able to remortgage my home and pay for it myself. So, I am asking for donations to pay for the first year, while I finish my schooling.
Her future is bright as is she and I am determined not to lose my child or her ability to be a productive, confident, joyful member of our society.
