I will travel the country and shoot drifters, hobos and all of those living outside of the mainstream 'system.' My primary subject matter would be the portraiture and on-the-ground documentation of transients in America and Canada who have abandoned the mainstream structure of capital and lifestyle who are likely not considered in national census and policy projects. This is true underground documentation and adventure. I would travel as a transient myself - on the road, on the rails and capturing the true free-thinkers of our time. Costs go toward film, minimal supplemental equipment, very basic living expenses, film shipping, processing, preliminary printing and editing, as well as printing supplies. The fund basically starts the project and carries it until a full portfolio is edited, built and presentable to editors, publishers, galley owners and curators. The work will be photographed primarily on 35mm black-and-white film, with around 15-20% captured on 35mm Kodachrome film - the sharpest, most archival and color-accurate of all color capture mediums, analog or digital. It is also commercially endangered, and could be the last major project recorded in the format, which has existed since the 30s as the first commercially viable color capture medium. In an exhibition, the Kodachrome imagery would be presented as large-format analog Cibachrome (Ilfochrome) prints. The black-and-white images will be hand-printed myself in a darkroom, as I have 14 years of analog printing experience. I am a working photographer and cinematographer; in 2007 I had three films I photographed simultaneously screening at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2008, I attended the Sundance Director's Lab, as one of only 4 selected cinematographers. I am a widely published photographer among French-language publications across North America and Europe, have formed photographic portfolios in Africa and have served as a lighting director for primary stories presented in Vanity Fair, GQ and others. My work can be seen at www.jarinblaschke.com. I intend to create nothing less than a landmark document of the truest counterculture in North America of our day.
