I took 18 teens from a financially challenged remote northern coastal community to Costa Rica last March. I had really hoped with 2 years of fund-raising and a local trust fund that helped pay for a trip for 13 to Europe previously we would meet the goal of $50,000 but we fell short and still need $20,000 to cover a debt I have assumed on my credit card(I believe so strongly in giving these kids a world view of life)We continue to fund-raise but the communities are really feeling the financial crunch. The trip provided the kids with vision of eco-tourism ideas that could be brought home to stimulate a near non-existant economy in our tiny island communities. They now have dreams of post-secondary and plans for the community.
If fundraising requires less than $20,00 than the extra money would go towards the next trip: hopefully an exchange with the highschool in Churchill, Manitoba to connect with other First Nations students and get an up-close view of the effects of global-warming on the cold north.
